First, to open the app simply select the guitar pick icon on your iPhone and you in!

Remember the good old days when you had to tune your guitar by another tuned musical instrument or if you were really good you did it by ear? Another feature of GuitarToolkit is the ability to hear what certain chords sound like , simply choose the chord you want to hear and swipe the screen from left to right to play the chord, what about left handed players you say? just go into your options and change your setting from right handed to left handed and boom, you now have a left hand guitar setup! Easy as that!

The application is also great for beginners which is another feature that will show you finger placement for certain chords (some that I have never even heard of), again swipe the screen and you will see what it sounds like!

There are also options for 6 string, 12 string, base and base5 guitars which is definitely cool!

GuitarToolkit also has a metronome feature, for those unfamiliar with the term a metronome is a way for a musician to keep time in beats per minute, the current version of the app only offers 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 and no time signature, I would think as the app evolves these options will be increased.

At a price of $9.99 (U.S.) this app is a little more expensive than your other iPhone apps but for the guitar player whether you are novice or pro it is money well spent!

Bloom is a really cool iPhone application for the music enthusiast, I’ve heard people talking about it so I figured I’d give it a shot. Why they gave it that name I don’t know because it has absolutely nothing to do with flowers!

Basically it is a graphical interface that creates synthesized music in which you have the option of just listening or to be creative, in the listening mode the app will create notes on its own which by the way you can add to but unlike creating mode the app will start without you with its own notes.

If you choose to create, Bloom does not start without your interaction, basically you are going to tell it what to play and you do that by tapping the screen, when you tap the screen a bubble will appear along with the sound of a musical note, tap the screen repeatedly in different spots and you will generate a multitude of bubbles and musical notes, the bubbles slowly expand then fade away as the musical notes also fade out. What it also does is create sounds that will repeat on a preset interval as long as you keep tapping the screen, if and when you stop tapping the screen the bubbles fade and the music decays completely you have to start again, so with that being said, this is one con I have noticed about this app is there is no way to save a pattern that you really like, once it fades or you leave the application it is gone forever.

What Bloom creates (or you create for that matter) is not only visually eye catching but also creates a beat or should I say a rhythm that actually sounds pretty nice in a techno sort of way.

I do think it lacks some options such as having different sounding tones like different musical instruments and being able to save a series of notes that you have created but for what it is , it really is a pretty cool app to have when you have time to just play. Or if you let it play on its own it can provide some soothing background tones while you relax or while you work. At $3.99 (U.S.) for the download it was definitely worth it.

If someone would have told me about this app 10 years ago I would have said how good can it possibly be? 10 years ago putting an app like this on a device as small as an iPhone was simply unheard of and even IF you could it would not have even come close to being useful, let alone good. But since the invention of the iPhone things have changed tremendously. BeatMaker is for those that are really into music and want to let their creative juices flow.

With BeatMaker you can arrange or “sequence” any sort of beat and sound you can think of. One can make their own sounds with downloaded or recorded Midi data enabling them to add different sounds or instruments to their creation.

The interface for this application can be somewhat overwhelming when first using it, I would suggest before diving into it that you read the instructions that will pop up when you first load the program, the instructions are very detailed and informative.

Also with BeatMaker you have a total of 16 drum pads ready and at your disposal, all are numbered and named for easy identification. Tapping a pad will give you the selected sound whether it be drum, snare, hi hat, violin and so on. The pads respond quickly but have been known to delay, especially if you sample across two adjacent pads.

There are so many options on this application one cannot simply remember all of them, honestly it is an app you just need to see for yourself, if you’re a musician that likes to create your own beats and sequences and work with different tracks I would highly advise this application. At $19.99 (U.S) it is a little more than your other iPhone apps but if you love music and creating it you will love this app!
